If you’re on a cruise that stops at Key West Florida, there are many fun things to do during your stay. Some people from the cruise ships will head to one of the many open concept restaurants and inclusive bars that they have to offer to catch some entertainment, food and drink. We decided with this being our first time in Key West we wanted to see a few of the points of interest.
We decided to check out the most southern point of the continental USA, the art galleries and the shops on Duval Street. Of course we knew we wanted to check out the Home of Key Lime Pie. We encourage you to check out the original and first Key Lime Pie shop.
While walking the streets you will notice many coffee shops, and stores offering key lime pie. The merchants will go as far as advertising that they are the most southern point or the original, but we wanted to share both our experience and photos about the place we discover just off the Duval street of Key West Florida.
First, the shop if very unassuming as you walk past, coming and leaving the port. It claims to be the original like many of them do but what makes this one very special is that they make it on site. The kitchen is open for the customer to see in through a glass barrier. The whole shop smells of fresh lime and baked crumble pie crust which really adds to the moment. The shop has everything key lime, from Christmas decorations, magnets and teas, and of course the limes they use in the pies. This small space has two small tables for customers to eat inside but it sure worth it standing up or eating out for this great pie.
To my surprise there are more than just your Traditional Key Lime, they also offered Key Lime Cheesecake, Key Lime Coconut Cream and Traditional Coconut Cream. We tried them all!
The pies are available by the slice or a by purchasing the whole pie, if you are exceptionally hungry or have a group of 6 or more it is more economical to but the full pie.
The traditional Key Lime pie was well balanced of sweetness and tart, the filling to crust was properly proportioned. The crumb crust was not overly hard and not crumbly either. The cheesecake was nice, and the key lime was subtle. Both coconut cream pies were great. Very light and fully and sweetened by coconut milk rather than flavouring.
This was a great find if you want to experience the best Key Lime Pie, the Keys have to offer. The only problem was you cannot take your pie back on the ship and there wasn’t a lot of space to truly enjoy and appreciate this delight!
